Ten former NFL players, including some high-profile names, were charged Thursday by the Justice Department for allegedly defrauding the league’s healthcare benefits program of millions of dollars through an elaborate fraud scheme.
The Justice Department announced the charges in a press release Thursday. “Ten former NFL players allegedly committed a brazen, multi-million dollar fraud on a health care plan meant to help their former teammates and other retired players pay legitimate, out-of-pocket medical expenses,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski, in a statement included in the release.
