$20 million in state funding marks milestone for Texas Tech dental school in El Paso

Texas Tech took another step in producing future dentists in El Paso who will serve West Texas and the borderland.

Of the 2,400 dentists who have graduated from a Texas dental school in the past decade, only 22 opened a practice in El Paso, a Texas Tech University official said.

Texas Tech is looking to change these statistics with the opening of the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine in El Paso in 2021.

State funding — to the tune of $20 million — was recently secured to open the state’s fourth dental school and the first new dental school in Texas in five decades. Gov. Greg Abbott signed the 2020-2021 budget Saturday.

  • And after they open the new dental school in El Paso there will still be a shortage there because all the graduates will move to Houston, Dallas and Austin.
