When Gov. Rick Perry touts the Texas economic miracle, as he did recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he’s only telling half the story.
True, the state enjoys low overall unemployment. Yes, Texas leads the nation in GDP growth.
But recent reports in The Dallas Morning News and KERA’s radio series “One Crisis Away” underscore the dangerous financial precipice that millions of Texans are edging toward. A combination of inadequate financial planning, living beyond their means or simply not earning enough to pay basic bills is pushing shockingly high numbers of families to the brink of poverty.
