Ex-Parkland employee to plead guilty to Medicare fraud | Dallas Morning News

Federal authorities say a former Parkland Memorial Hospital employee illegally used information from thousands of patients to defraud Medicare and Medicaid.

Viju Mathew, 49, of Garland has agreed to plead guilty to a federal fraud charge and is scheduled to go before a judge later this month to formally enter the plea. Matthew, who was indicted on a federal identity theft charge last year, was a patient registration specialist at Parkland when authorities say he misused the patient information to drum up business for Dallas Home Health Care, which he formed in 2006.

Parkland discovered the thefts and fired him in October 2011.

“We take protection of our confidential patient information very seriously, and we are pleased to see the successful conclusion of this matter,” said Mike Malaise, a Parkland senior vice president.
