FORT PIERCE — The federal charges accusing a Stuart obstetrician and gynecologist are the result of a former employee chasing a whistleblower reward and an overeager rookie investigator, her attorney said as the trial opened Tuesday in federal court.
Dr. Sheetal Kanar Kumar, 48, was originally charged in October, when she surrendered to authorities, on 29 counts alleging she made fraudulent health care claims between January 2014 and July 2017 to Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana and others.
The claims yielded $637,150 in payment for health care items and services “that were not provided as billed,” court records show.
