Former Arizona Medicaid Official Pleads Guilty To Fraud

A former official with Arizona’s health care program for the poor pleaded guilty Tuesday to fraud and theft charges in a case in which he was accused of stealing millions in public money.

Michael John Veit, the former chief procurement officer for the state’s Medicaid program, agreed to serve 10 years in prison, pay nearly $6 million in restitution and forfeit his benefits in a state retirement system as part of his guilty plea to charges of theft and fraudulent schemes and artifices.

Prosecutors say Veit participated in a scheme in which payments submitted in the name of one of the agency’s vendors ended up in the hands of the procurement officer, one of his associates and some of Veit’s family members.
