Greg Abbott to Texas agencies: Reform contracting now

Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday ordered state agency heads to enact stringent reforms to contracting practices by Sunday instead of waiting for new laws to pass the Legislature, one of his first acts as governor that frames his administration as cracking down on contracting problems like those plaguing the state’s massive health agency.

“As governor, I must ensure that all state agencies are committed to maximizing value and utilizing open and transparent contracting processes,” Abbott wrote.

The order adds to a chorus of calls for reform after an American-Statesman investigation raised questions about a $110 million state deal with an untested Austin tech company hired to help with Medicaid fraud investigations
