Janek apologizes for lapses as senators question his leadership – Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN – Fighting for his job after weeks of revelations about contracting irregularities and questionable tuition payments, Texas health commissioner Kyle Janek publicly apologized during a Wednesday legislative hearing in which state senators took turns angrily asking why they should have confidence in his continued leadership.

After the grilling, one of the senators, Joan Huffman of Houston, became the third lawmaker and first Republican to call for Janek to resign.

Janek, a former Houston state senator who previously had avoided heated questions at two similar hearings this month, faced an avalanche of them from the Senate Finance Committee over two hours of testimony centered on several no-bid contracts collectively worth more than $1 billion and a combined $134,000 in tuition gifts for two aides to the commissioner.
