The state of Texas on Friday moved against the contractor in charge of pre-authorizing controversial orthodontic and dental procedures, canceling a large contract with ACS Healthcare and suing the company and its corporate owner, Xerox Corp., to recover hundreds of millions of dollars regulators say they lost due to the company’s negligence.
The company, one of the state’s largest contractors and a generous donor to Gov. Rick Perry, had been in charge of reviewing claims from practitioners seeking reimbursement from Medicaid since 2003. After a 2007 court decision required Texas to greatly expand its dental and orthodontic coverage of the state’s poorest children, claims for the procedures soared.
