AUSTIN — A Democratic advocacy group has asked the Texas Rangers, Travis County district attorney and State Auditor’s Office to investigate whether several state agencies misused taxpayer money to pay employees long after they left their jobs.
The Lone Star Project on Tuesday sent letters to investigators asking them to look into whether five state agencies broke the law when they used an obscure pay category called “emergency leave” to provide lucrative financial send-offs to dozens of ex-workers, a widespread problem The Dallas Morning News exposed in a series of recent stories.
The Lone Star Project specifically mentioned five agencies that were cited in recent news reports: The office of the attorney general, Department of Agriculture, General Land Office, Teacher Retirement System and Water Development Board.
