AUSTIN – One of Rick Perry’s most prominent gubernatorial appointees knew as early as 2012 about the project now at the center of a growing contracting scandal, the appointee disclosed Tuesday, offering the clearest indication yet of how high in state government the issue may reach.
Kyle Janek, a former Houston state senator tapped to lead the mega-agency that runs all health and human services in Texas, said he signed off on a November 2012 funding request for the Medicaid fraud detection project after being “misled” by top staffers about key details, including how the vendor was chosen.
