Donald Trump told Bloomberg Politics Wednesday that he won’t be choosing former Gov. Rick Perry as his running mate, but would like to find some role for him in his administration.
“I like him,” Trump said of Perry in the interview. “I’d like to get him involved in some capacity at a high level. Because I think he’s very good. I think he’s very, very good. He’s also very good on the border.”
That is very different than Trump’s appraisal of Perry’s performance on the border when the former Texas governor was a presidential rival.
“I think Rick Perry did a terrible job as governor of Texas, where the border security was terrible,” Trump said during a visit to Laredo last July to inspect the border. “Now your new governor is doing a great job. Abbott, Gov. (Greg) Abbott is doing a great job, but Rick Perry, I don’t think he even really understands what it means.”
